DOCTOR KILLED IN BIKE MISHAP

NORTH PLAINFIELD - A borough doctor was killed early Saturday morning while riding his bicycle after an automobile struck him and dragged his body underneath the vehicle for 20 feet Scott Keil, 47, an ear, nose and throat specialist who unsuccessfully ran for Borough Council last year, died at 1:10 a.m. Saturday. The accident occurred about 30 minutes earlier at Duer Street and Craig Place in North Plainfield, New Jersey. Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne J Forrest said.

Keil had offices in Somerville and North Plainfield and was known throughout the borough as an active community member. Many mourned his loss Saturday. "He was the kind of guy that every town really needed more of, said Bill Rathen, a neighbor and a colleague on several borough panels "He was one of the preeminent, selfless people in town, giving back everything he could to the community - his time his effort."

Keil was bicycling east on Craig Place when he was struck by a 1999 Plymouth Breeze driven by Sharon Davidson, 43, of Plainfield. Authorities said. An investigation of the crash is continuing. Davidson was issued a summons for failure to yield after stopping. Keil was not wearing reflective garments or a helmet at the time of the accident, authorities said. (According to his office administrator, the light from his bicycle had been stolen the day earlier). Rathjean said he wasn't surprised Keil was bicycling so late at night because Keil was an avid bike rider.

Councilman Bob Hitchcock knew Keil as a colleague with the borough's shade tree commission. Keil was knowledgeable about trees and concerned about how they would be incorporated into the borough's downtown revitalization program he said. "He really contributed a lot to the community" Hitchcock said. Councilman Bob Berger, one of four democrats who ran against the Republican ticket that included Keil last year, also knew the doctor as a willing volunteer. "We're pretty shocked" he said. "He really took it upon himself to be a concerned citizen." By KEITH RYZEWICZ Staff Writer Courier News October 31, 1999
